Egan's talent takes her to new levels

REVIEW: A longtime ingénue proves she's finally grown up.

[Egan's] got the goods as a singer and actress to tackle some of Broadway's most demanding tunes — interpretive and technical bramble bushes that would tangle many a talented interpreter. She knows exactly how much to pull the heartstrings in "My Funny Valentine," just how much girlish coyness is needed for "How Lovely to Be a Woman" from "Bye Bye, Birdie," and is savvy enough to include a smattering of the classics ... with an achingly tender and understated rendition of the Gershwins' "Someone to Watch Over Me." Her interpretations are never overdone and always musical.  Egan's voice has matured, and it's the perfect Broadway instrument: a balanced combination of technique and moxie. The best musical-theater voices never sound tightly controlled or fussy; emotion and clear, idiomatic delivery must be perfectly matched. That's Egan to a T.

An Energetic Egan Electrifies

This Broadway singing star is a high-voltage performer who dominates a stage with a galvanizing presence not often found in such a relatively young artist ... Egan was fully charged, her often electrifying presentation the work of a gifted young artist who seems to improve with each outing.

One thing is easy to overlook because of Egan's commanding ability to capture an audience's attention with sheer performing skills, but it is equally important:  Egan is an enormously intelligent artist, very much in control of what she is doing.  Her insight into the inner elements of each piece she sang allowed her the freedom to invest songs with many seemingly spontaneous qualities and her first-rate comedic skills.

Egan's acting skills are fully the equal of her singing abilities.  She also understands that the cabaret stage requires a smaller focus and a more intimate connection with the audience. To top it off, she seemed to be enjoying every minute of what she was doing - an enjoyment she shared with her captivated listeners.

Egan’s Powerful Performance Mixes New and Old

Susan Egan’s love for the Broadway musical is obvious. In the intimate setting of the Orange County Performing Arts Center’s Founders Hall, Egan’s powerful voice and charming personality beautifully combine Broadway classics with insightful new music by some wonderful up-and-coming composers.

While her voice is impressive, it turns out to be only a supporting character.  There are frustrated singers all over the country with fantastic voices.  The more important ingredient, the ingredient that makes an evening with her such a joy, is Egan’s down-to-earth persona and genuine empathy for the messages embedded in her music. It is like an all night conversation with your best friend.

This performance is a seamless weaving of the classic and the modern, an homage to the music of the past and present and the universal human emotions experienced in each.

Susan Egan delights fans with Broadway hits

"Susan Egan has a Nicole Kidman cat's smile and a Cleopatra haircut. And she has a sweet, pure singing voice that seems effortless despite its impressively wide range, and a career on Broadway that's the stuff dreams of stardom are made of ... She's casual and unpretentious, wearing slim-fitting black pants and a sequined tank top, talking not just directly to the audience, but to individual audience members.

But what's she's known for — and what her audience is there for — is her unusually pretty voice. Egan brings her vocal skill and her personality to her set list, with plenty of humorous, playful numbers. Egan gives each song her own phrasings and vocal treatment, and her bubbly, appealing demeanor seeps through into each one.

But she also knows when to slow things down and take material more seriously ... Her "Someone to Watch Over Me" is achingly sincere; "My Funny Valentine" has beautiful dark edges; and "I Dreamed a Dream," from "Les Miserables," will make tears prick your eyelids.

Egan knows how to insert her personal flair into songs, and make them sound as though they were written for and about her. [But] it's [her] spontaneity and genuineness that make an evening with Egan more than just a parade of pretty songs.
